  • The internet can be a scary place, especially without a proper password manager. We put together a list of the best password managers you can get right now.
  • To accommodate such scenarios, Microsoft offers app passwords that are used to essentially bypass the use of MFA for the non-browser applications. Keep in mind that the app password is tied to the user’s account in Microsoft 365 portal so this password cannot be generated outside of Microsoft 365 because it’s stored in Azure.
  • If you have a laptop that has non-browser applications like Outlook, Word, and Excel, create one app password named Laptop for these apps. Create another app password named Desktop for the same applications that run on your desktop computer. It's recommended to create one app password per device, rather than one app password per application.

Office 365 app password is the alternative to multi-factor authentication for applications that cannot natively support MFA and for non-browser applications. Click your avatar or user icon in the right top corner and then click the My account option.

Before you get started, set up 1Password on your Windows PC.

Create and edit items

When you open 1Password, you’ll see a list of all your items, like your passwords and credit cards. Select an item to see its details:

To create an item, click (Ctrl + N). Then choose the type of item to create. Enter the details and click Save.

To edit an item, select it and click Edit (Ctrl + E). When you’re done making changes, click Save.

To see only certain types of items, select a category in the sidebar. Select All Items to see everything in the current vault.

Use 1Password in your browser

1Password lets you fill passwords, credit cards, and addresses directly in your browser.

Use 1Password mini to fill in apps

1Password mini makes it easy to fill your details in apps. To open 1Password mini, click the 1Password icon in the notification area (Ctrl + Alt + backslash ()).

To fill a username or password in an app:

  1. Open an app.
  2. Open 1Password mini and right-click a Login item.
  3. Drag the “username” or “password” menu item to any field in the app.

Search 1Password

Searching is the fastest way to find what you need in 1Password.

To search the current view, use the search field above the list of items (Ctrl + F). To search all items, press Ctrl + Shift + F.

Sort items

To change how items are sorted in the list, click “items sorted by” below the search field.

For example, you can sort your items by the date last you last made changes to them.

Organize with favorites and tags

You can organize your items with tags or mark them as favorites to quickly access them when you need them.

To mark an item as a favorite, select it and clickbelow the item’s title.

To create a tag, edit an item, enter the name of the tag in the tag field, and click Save. Your tags automatically appear in the sidebar.

Switch vaults and accounts

You can use vaults in 1Password to organize your items and share them with others. If you have multiple 1Password accounts, each account has its own vaults.

To switch to a specific vault or view items from all the vaults in an account, click All Vaults (Ctrl + D) and choose a vault or account.

Move and copy items

You can use drag and drop to move and copy items between vaults.

Use Watchtower

Watchtower tells you about password breaches and other security problems on the websites you have saved in 1Password.

To get alerted when a website you have an account for is added to Watchtower, choose 1Password > Settings, then click Notifications and turn on “Watchtower alerts”.

Enlarge passwords

You can temporarily enlarge a password to make it easier to see while entering it on another device or reading it aloud.

To enlarge a password, hover over it. Then click and choose Large Type (Ctrl + L).

Delete items

To move an item to the Trash, right-click it and choose Move to Trash (Ctrl + Del).

To restore an item from the Trash, click Trash in the sidebar, select the item, then click Restore.

To delete the items in the Trash, right-click Trash and choose Empty Trash.

Lock 1Password

When you’re done using 1Password, you can lock it. To lock 1Password, clickin the top right corner (Windows logo key + Shift + L). Unlock 1Password again by entering your Master Password.

Dropbox Passwords is a desktop app, mobile app, and browser extension by Dropbox. This article explains how to use Dropbox Passwords to save your account usernames and passwords, sync them across your devices, and have them autofill or suggest passwords when you sign into websites and mobile apps.

Note: The Dropbox Passwords desktop app is not currently available for download. The desktop app instructions in this article only apply to users who’ve previously installed the app.

Add or edit account usernames and passwords

You can add accounts to Dropbox Passwords (along with their usernames, passwords, website URLs, and any notes you want to remember). You can go back and edit them anytime.

  • To add or edit on the desktop app or in the browser extension, open the app or browser extension and click Add or Edit.
    • Note: The browser extension will automatically save account usernames and passwords when you create or sign in to an account on a website.
  • To add or edit on the mobile app, open the app and tap “+” (the plus sign) to add, or tap the name of the account and Edit to edit.

Remove account usernames and passwords

You can remove any account from Dropbox Passwords (including its username, password, website URL, and any notes you added). To remove an account on the desktop and mobile apps or in the browser extension, click or tap the “” (ellipsis) next to the account you’d like to remove and click or tap Remove.

Get suggestions for strong passwords

Dropbox Passwords can suggest strong passwords.

In the desktop and mobile app or in the browser extension:

  1. Open the Dropbox Passwords desktop or mobile app or browser extension.
  2. Click Add (desktop and browser extension) or “+”(plus sign, on mobile).
  3. Click Suggest strong password.
    • Click the gear icon to change the length and amount of numbers and symbols in the password.
  4. Click Use password.

From the password field:

  1. Start to create a new account on a website.
  2. Click the Dropbox Passwords icon that appears in the password text box. A dropdown will appear with a suggested password.
  3. Click Use password.
  4. Continue to create your account.

Import usernames and passwords

If you have saved account usernames and passwords in a browser or a CSV file from a different password manager, you can import them in the Dropbox Passwords desktop app or browser extension.

Notes:

  • The columns in your CSV file must be labeled so Dropbox Passwords knows how to import the information. Although Dropbox Passwords can recognize a range of labels, we recommend labeling them “Name”, “Password”, “Username”, “Notes”, and “URL”.
  • This feature doesn’t currently support importing passwords from Safari.

To import account usernames and passwords in the desktop app:

  1. Open the Dropbox Passwords desktop app.
  2. Click your avatar (profile picture or initials).
  3. Click Preferences.
  4. Under Import, if you’d like to import usernames and passwords from a browser, click FromBrowser, then click Import. If you’d like to import usernames and passwords from a CSV file from a different password manager, click From password manager.
    • Note: Chrome users on Mac may need to enter their computer password.

To import account usernames and passwords in the browser extension:

  1. Open the Dropbox Passwords browser extension.
  2. Click your avatar (profile picture or initials).
  3. Click Preferences.
  4. Click Import.
  5. Click the browser or password manager you’d like to import from and follow the prompts.

Export usernames and passwords as a CSV file

You can export your all of your accounts (including their usernames and passwords) from Dropbox Passwords as a CSV file at any time, even if you downgraded your Dropbox account to Basic or joined a Dropbox Business team.

To export your accounts from the desktop app or browser extension:

  2. Click your avatar (profile picture or initials).
  3. Click Preferences.
  4. Click the Account tab.
  5. Click Export.
  6. Click Export to confirm.

To export your accounts from the mobile app:
